LAFAYETTE, La. (The Daily Advertiser) – IBERIABANK announced former City-Parish Mayor-President Joey Durel has been named business development officer for Lafayette.

Durel recently completed his third term, the first person ever elected to serve three terms. He left office because he was term-limited.

“We are thrilled to have Joey join our team and are confident that his background in owning and managing his own business along with his extensive experience in running our city will be an asset to our company,” said Jerry Vascocu, Acadiana market president. “His unique experience will also add to the diversity of our team, enhance our client relationships and help leverage our investments in Acadiana.”

Durel was owner of his family-owned business, Durel’s Pet Shops, as well as the owner of several other businesses, including Arby’s restaurants. He was named “Sam Walton Small Businessman of the Year” in 1996, chaired the board of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce in 2001, and was named “CEO of the Year” by the Independent Weekly at the Acadiana Top 50 Companies

Business Luncheon in 2010. He also received the B.I. Moody III College of Business Award in 2015. Durel serves on the board of the Lafayette Central Park.

“I have been a great fan of IBERIABANK for a long time, both as a customer, and as Lafayette mayor-president,” Durel said. “IBERIABANK is a great corporate citizen, and we always knew we could count on them for help in our community. I am especially proud to have the largest bank in the state maintain its headquarters in Acadiana, right here in Lafayette. This job will allow me to continue to play a role on developing Acadiana, while giving me the flexibility to pursue other interests.”

A Lafayette native, Durel received a bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and is a graduate of “Leadership Lafayette” and “Leadership Louisiana.” He is married to the former Lynne Miller and has three children and seven grandchildren.
