A cross walk in front of Duson Elementary has been home to crossing guard Barbara Breaux for almost 40 years, and she says she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
“Three generations have crossed the street with Ms. Barbara.” says Chief of Police, Kip Judice.
This year is the 39th year Breaux has worked the Duson Elementary cross walk. She began her service as a crossing guard here in the fall of 1977.
Breaux says the cross walk has become her second home. “When summertime comes I kinda miss the kids and some parents that you see. You know to see the new generation starting all over again.”
Duson Chief of Police, Kip Judice has been working with Breaux for only a couple of months.
He says it didn’t take long to recognize her hard work. “Very reliable. Here everyday rain or shine it doesn’t matter to Ms. Barbara. Ms. Barbara is here for the children. She doesn’t do it for any other reason.”
Breaux says the children are what’s keeping her coming back year after year. She says her main goal is their safety. “They are almost like my kids. I’m just trying to keep them safe the best way I know how. It’s like I say, it’s just something I love.”
Breaux has seen many children come and go, she says she loves her job and wants to continue her work as a crossing guard.
