ORIGINAL STORY:

One person is dead and another is in the hospital after shots rang out in Crowley early Sunday morning.

Officials say one of the shots fired was by a Crowley Police Officer.

Crowley Police Chief Jimmy Broussard says three officers were working an off-duty security detail outside of a building when they heard a crowd gathered at the side of it. It was soon after, that shots were fired.

“[One of the officers] went through the crowd to try to disperse them. Made the block and came back around and when he parked his unit is when they heard one shot and then another two or three shots rang out after that,” said Broussard.

He tells News 10 as the officers responded, they found a 24-year-old man shot in the head who later died from his injuries, “One of the officers tried to assist with first aid. At the same time, the other officers tried to decipher the situation which led to the other part.. The officer-involved shooting.”

According to Broussard, the man who was shot by the officer had to undergo surgery and is recovering.

While Crowley Police investigate the shooting that left the first man dead, the officer-involved shooting has been handed over to Louisiana State Police for investigation.

“State Police is always called in something like this, because they have jurisdictional authority throughout the state. And of course, we want to surrender it over to them because we know that they will do a full and thorough investigation,” said Broussard.

He adds that this is only the second officer-involved shooting that Crowley has seen in the past two years.
