When over 60 employees arrived to Community Rehabilitation Hospital of Lafayette for work today they were shocked to learn that no one would be getting paid. Later Wednesday afternoon, News 10 learned the employees later had been paid.
Employees expressed their concerns before the incident got resolved. One employee, June Carmouche, says many employees of the business have been working for free for almost a month. No one ever told them that the hospital was having financial issues.
June says, “We’ve been used because y’all used us to work here so that ya’ll can provide whatever y’all need to provide for y’all resources. Now ya’ll leave us here today telling us ‘Oh, ya’ll come to get a check but y’all are not getting one.’”
According to administrators the hospital has been having money problems since September 2014. Felicia Harmon is cook at the hospital; she says recently employees were unable to cash their pay checks because of insufficient funds.
Patients at the long term care center say once they heard that employees weren’t getting paid the environment became worried. For now employees say they’ll continue to take care of the patients who despite these issues remain the number one priority.
