This Saturday marks the one year anniversary of the Grand Theatre shooting.
It was an event that changed Lafayette forever.
On the night of July 23, 2015, John Houser, a man from Alabama, opened fire inside Theater 14 during a screening of Trainwreck.
The gunman killed Jillian Johnson, 33, of Lafayette and Mayci Breaux, 21, of Franklin.
Nine others were wounded by Houser’s gunfire before Lafayette Police arrived. Houser then shot and killed himself.
News 10’s Emily Giangreco spoke to Mayci’s mother, Dondie Breaux, on how she’s still struggling to cope with the loss of her daughter.
On July 23rd, 2015 Mayci and her boyfriend went to the movies completely unaware of the tragic events that would unfold.
Now one year later, Mayci’s mom revisited the very theatre where her daughter took her last breath.
“I had sadness because I know that’s where she took her last breath but I also had peace, you know? Because now I know where she was and what it looks like it was just a sense of peace. I always wanted to go sit where she sat,” Dondie Breaux told KLFY.
“Losing a child, no matter what age is just hard. It’s a piece of you that’s gone and you have to learn how to live without that piece,” she added.
Mayci Breaux was 21 when her life was taken from her in the Grand Theatre.
“When people say it gets easier it doesn’t, the pain is still there you just learned how to deal with it better but you just have to live every day according to what they want you to live and that’s what we’ve been doing all year. Trying to stay happy, trying to make it through without her,” Dondie said.
Mayci’s death came just days before a big family event.
“The weekend after she died is when we were leaving to go so we didn’t take it last year so this is going to be the first vacation we have without her, that we take every year. And we’ll just get through it just like we have to get through everything else and we will with the love of family, we will. We got through all this we got through the year and,” Dondie explained.
