Facebook has censored the king cake baby. King Cake Snob, a website that rates king cakes, reported that Facebook rejected to boost a post because of the naked king cake babies.
The Facebook post that stared the controversy pictures of the iconic king cake baby announcing the start of king cake season. Facebook told King Cake Snob its post was rejected because it included “an image depicting excessive skin or nudity…” it continued with “this kind of material is sensitive in nature.”
Today News 10 took a look into the tradition of the king cake baby. The king cake tradition was brought to Louisiana from France around the 1870s. And a special trinket has always been in the cake.
“Before there were king cake babies people used things like coins, pecans, peas, and little tokens that they would insert so that tradition goes way back to France and evolved to the baby,” says Jesse Guidry with Lafayette Travel.
The baby now seen in cakes represents the Christ Child. As tradition goes if you find the baby in your piece of cake, it’s your obligation to buy the next cake.
“They say that it’s bad luck to start making king cakes too soon. We do make them for special orders, but we start with the King Cakes on January 6 and that’s official first day of the season,” says Nick Keller, with Keller’s Bakery in Lafayette. The bakery is known for its traditional king cakes.
“This is pastry dough that we make from scratch, we proof the dough, we make all of our fillings from scratch,” he said. The cakes are decorated with the traditional purple green and gold icing with a baby in the middle.
“If you find the baby, it’s said that you will be blessed with prosperity in luck in the coming year,” said Guidry.
