JEANERETTE, La. (KLFY) – Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fight that broke out between a Jeanerette police officer and a deputy city marshal.
Captain Wendell Raborn said deputies were dispatched to the Jeanerette Police Department around 10:20 p.m. Thursday night.
Raborn said the deputy city marshal, who was off-duty at the time, got into a “serious physical altercation” with the on-duty police officer inside the police station.
Both officers were injured in the fight. Raborn said the police officer was taken to a local hospital after suffering a bite mark to his right forearm and experiencing neck and back pain.
The deputy city marshal suffered small lacerations to the back of his head but refused treatment.
Jeanerette Police Chief Jeff Matthews and City Marshal Fernest Martin asked the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office to conduct an independent investigation.
The sheriff’s office is withholding the names of the officers involved pending the completion of the investigation.
Raborn said no charges have been filed but the results of the investigation will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office.
