It may be good for business and perhaps bad for the community but some local Dollar General stores want to start selling alcohol.

The discount chain has put in an applicaton with the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control to sell beer and wine at a few of its stores in the Acadia Parish towns of Crowley,Estherwood, Mermentau and Iota.

According to the Louisiana Alcohol and Tobacco Permit online records, 33 Dollar Generals in Louisiana currently have applications pending to sell beer and liquor.

Dollar General started selling alcohol in stores across the country in 2008 and now wants to expand the initiative to Acadia Parish.

If approved, Louisiana officials will issue the state permits, but the local parish council offices could reject the measure.
