Fire department personnel worked through the morning at railroad crossings in multiple cities after a railcar carrying “tall oil” has been compromised and has leaked the chemical.
The leak began somewhere in Terrebonne Parish and continued to the St. Mary/Iberia Parish line where the train was stopped.
It has been identified as a “non-hazardous” material, but poses safety concerns to motor vehicles on roadways.
As of 1:50 am the leak has been contained with assistance from Lafayette FD Hazmat crews.
Officials say, railroad crossings in Franklin have been reopened after application of sand.
Franklin Fire Department said on a Facebook post, “Please use extreme caution when passing as the roads may still be slick until full cleanup can take place.”
Other crossings around the parish are open as well with the exception of the railroad crossings west of Highway 83 to the St Mary / Iberia parish line.
