BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – Funeral arrangements have been set for Alton Sterling, the man who died during an officer-involved shooting.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 15 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and the service will begin at 11 a.m. It will be held at the Southern University F. G. Clark Activity Center.

“The services will be handled as a private event in the campus facility in terms of traffic, parking, and security,” officials with Southern University said in a press release.

Sterling, 37, died Tuesday, July 5 after he was shot by a Baton Rouge Police officer outside the Triple S Food Mart on N. Foster Drive. Two officers were responding to a call about a man who threatened someone outside the store. The caller told police the man had a gun. When the officer’s arrived on scene, there was a struggle and Sterling was shot multiple times in the chest and back.

Witnesses recorded the shooting on cell phones and the video was released to the media.

The investigation surrounding Alton’s death is ongoing and is being handled by the FBI.

District Attorney Hillar Moore announced Monday that he has recused his office from the case due to his personal relationship with the parents of Officer Blane Salamoni, who is one of the two officers involved in the incident. The second officer involved in the incident is Howie Lake II.

Vigils and protest have been held since Sterling’s death. The protests became heated Friday, July 9 when an unscheduled protest was held outside the Baton Rouge Police Headquarters. Since then there have been several protest demonstrations, including two peaceful protests in downtown Baton Rouge.

Roughly 200 people have been arrested for various charges related to the protests.
