A new dog park is coming to Lafayette soon. A groundbreaking was held today at Beaullieu Park.

The park is located in the 400 block of West Bluebird Drive.

This will be the second dog park In Lafayette.

The other dog park is at Graham Brown Memorial Park on Pont Des Mouton Road.

Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux said, “It’s going to be another one of the dog parks that we’re putting in place. We broke ground earlier and just reinforcing that we’re a pet friendly community. Anytime we can get a dog park underway we’re excited about that, and it fits in with our no kill initiative.”

The dog park will include a large fenced in area with benches, canine agility and exercise equipment and a pavilion.

Robideaux expained, “It’s (funding) coming from Parks and Rec. We’re working with some potential sponsors some corporate donors that are interested in helping out so we’re trying to secure those but it’ll be a public private partnership.”

Approximately one acre will be fenced and will also include a watering and shower station for the dogs.

“We’re a community that loves our pets and so things like this are always very positively received. the community loves having these kinds of parks and so the more we can do them I think the better off we are as a community,” added Robideaux.

Shelley Delahoussaye, Shelter Supervisor Lafayette Animal Shelter, said, “We have increased our adoptions and rescues significantly since mayor robideaux took office. Last year we adopted a thousand 59 animals so I think this would benefit our potential adopters and even our past adopters have another avenue of enjoyment for their pets.”

Officials say the dog park will be completed by approximately the end of August of this year, weather permitting.
