LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. (KLFY) – Earlier today Governor John Bel Edwards walked the streets in the Derby Heights subdivision and entered residents homes to look at the flood damage that still remains.

The governor has been touring southern Louisiana for a first-hand look at the devastation caused by the historic flood of 2016.

“I come out to talk to people to make sure they understand what’s available to them and that if they need extra assistance and you’re in a position to deliver it that you do that and I’m asking people to make sure that they’re patient because this is going to be many, many months in process to get them all of the relief that they’re going to be able to them,” Edwards told News 10.

Today, he witnessed the mess that residents are still cleaning up.

“This is what I’m supposed to be doing. I have nothing more important to do right now than to be here with all of these elected officials behind me and with people from my staff making sure we do everything we can to take care of these people,” Edwards said.

He toured some of the homes and comforted those who lost everything.

Cynthia Trahan says she felt a sense of comfort knowing that Governor Edwards took time out of his busy schedule to look at what’s left of her home.

“It does give us a sense of comfort that everything’s going to be alright, eventually, with him coming and being here. It’s just really hard to see now but you know we, it’s really…it’s heart breaking but at the same time it’s comforting to know that he’s here and he’s here for us,” Trahan said.

Governor Edwards is encouraging those who were affected by the flood to go to http://gov.louisiana.gov/page/resources-for-flood-victims and apply for an at home shelter.
