UPDATE: IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY)—A helicopter has crashed tonight in Iberia Parish in the Atchafalaya Basin and one person was reported in the water.
In initial reports, Sheriff Louis Ackal told News 10, an Air Force helicopter crashed and the crew was in the water.
Tonight we spoke with an Air Force Public Affairs Officer at the Pentagon. He checked with the Air Force Operations Center, which has no knowledge of any Air Force helicopters down tonight.
Sheriff Ackal also said a rescue boat and two air boats were rushed out to the scene in the basin.
We’ve also received calls and reports that it’s not an air force helicopter.
ORIGINAL: Iberia Parish, La. (KLFY) Authorities are investigating after a helicopter crashed in the Atchafalaya Basin, according to Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal.
The crash happened about 4:15 p.m. in the waters between Charenton and Franklin, Ackal said.
Rescue efforts are underway for the helicopter crew and any wreckage, Ackal said.
A staging area has been set up at the Myette Point Boat Launch in St. Mary Parish, according to Ackal.
