Adopt a Teacher has grown tremendously over the past couple of years.
It started off with 60 teachers, to 700, to now almost a thousand teachers across Acadiana.
This whole project came to be when Kristin Askleson, the News Editor of The Daily Advertiser, was scrolling through her Facebook and put two and two together.
Askleson noticed that there are people who have supplies that might be willing to help people needed supplies.
That was the beginning of the adopt the teacher program.
All teachers grades pre-k through 12th were welcomed to create a list of things they need to enhance the upcoming school year.
Along with the list, there’s a section where the teachers tell you a little more about themselves and their classroom.
The lists include anything from extra paper to pencils to even stickers.
With the demand being so high this year, the Daily Advertiser is coming up with creative ways to get more folks in the community involved.
Askleson says “we’re going to issue a challenge to other media companies in Acadiana and say hey this is what were doing, so we’re challenging you to adopt a teacher or donate to this cause. “
They hope to get everyone involved, from the council to the chamber, and even school board members
Kristin says “you know, one person can make a difference in one classroom, and so were challenging as many people to do that.”
There are about 600 teachers still waiting to be adopted.
The supply drop off will be at the daily advertiser on Bertand.
