Residents are speaking out after gunfire rang out at the intersection of Cherokee St. and Jasmine St. in New Iberia Thursday night.

Some say it sounded like machine guns in battle as bullets flew through homes of families who were not involved in the violent flareup.

Geneva William’s house was struck by the gunfire and she says gun violence affects more than just the one who pulls the trigger.

She tells News 10, “They’re shooting but they’re not aiming. They’re shooting and hitting [they’re] hitting other bystanders and stuff.”

Williams says she’s lucky none of her loved ones got hurt when the bullet went through her home.

“We just heard gunshots flying by my window. One went through my house, went through my room and almost hit my friend in the head… And my little boy, that’s his favorite spot to sit on my bed. Now, if he was there he was going to get shot dead in his temple. So good thing he wasn’t there.”

She says an increase in patrolling may help.

News 10 spoke to the Iberia Parish Sheriffs Office and they say once they got to the scene, witnesses weren’t cooperating with the investigation. They added that no charges were filed and no one was injured.
