A local non-profit is attempting to build better relationships with law enforcement and the community.

To many basketball is just another contact sport, but for ‘A New Vision Leadership’, it’s a way to unite the youth and police officers in the community.

“Over the last couple of years, Northside’s been winning. So, we’re ready,” said Haylen Mallery, a junior at Northside High School.

One of many students in A New Vision Leadership program taking their fellow officers to the court. “It’s a really great opportunity for us as the youth to be able to play against officers in a fun community event,” said Mallery.

For the past four years, ‘Hoop Dreams’ has allowed law enforcement to put down their badge and pick up a ball, spending time with the very people they serve.

“Officers like to come. Take a break. Get out their police uniforms. All the gear. Put on some gym shorts and some athletic shoes. Try to whip up with these youngsters,” said Officer Kendall Sam with the Lafayette Police Department.

CEO of ‘A New Vision Leadership Erica Williams said it allows teens to connect on another level and maintain a good relationship with the department.

“If we want safe environments in our community, we have to put together events like this to bring the police department into the community,” said Williams.

Partnerships with several organizations and places like Lafayette Parks and Recreations believe it’s vital to continue this effort.

“To understand that the police here are for protection and the police are here as a partner with the community,” said Royal Hill, Manager of Parks and Recs.

The organizers believe this sport promotes teamwork and camaraderie. Students have dominated the court in the previous years, but Officer Kendall Sam believe this is their time to win.

“It’ll be a real competitive game. People like for us to take it easy because they’re kids, but they’ll be treated as grown men this weekend,” he said.

Anyone is invited to watch Hoop Dreams at the Domingue Center from 2 to 6 p.m.

Along with the game, there will be band and dance performances, food and more. This is free and open to the public.
