Hope for Opelousas is a non-profit organization striving to stop the cycle of poverty through enrichment programming for youth and families. The organization also provides opportunities for people to serve one another.

Aside from their after-school program, where kids are provided with tutoring, and enrichment opportunities, HFO been impacting the community in a different way– with Hope House.

In 2007, the house on South Main Street was purchased and renovated by Hope Presbyterian Church. The church wanted to use it to house retreat teams coming to Opelousas. One year later, HFO began working with the church.

“For the last 11 years, hosting mission teams and service projects in our community has been a big part of our mission. We’ve seen 400 college students come and inhabit this house and go off and do great work in our community,” said Loren Carriere, executive director for Hope For Opelousas.

He says so much has come from being able to use the house. “Either painting houses for neighbors, working in our local school system, and just generally trying to be a blessing in our community.”

But now, the house is being sold, so Carriere says the agency’s mission has expanded and they need the public’s help, “This giving day we are attempting to purchase this house. We want to own this house, we want to buy it. We want to continue doing that kind of work.”

For every donation given, an anonymous donor and the Pugh Family Foundation will match up to $45,000.
