RAYNE, La. (KLFY) – I-10 West near Rayne is now open after being closed for several hours today due to a crash involving two 18-wheelers.

The incident happened sometime before 10:30 a.m. about a mile outside of Rayne.

Rayne Police Chief Carroll Stelly told News 10 one of the 18-wheelers was traveling eastbound and swerved into the median to avoid colliding with five cars that were involved in separate crashes in the eastbound lane.

The eastbound 18-wheeler crashed into another 18-wheeler traveling in the westbound lane.

“During that impact the saddle bags of the 18-wheeler punctured, which threw diesel all over the roadway,” said Louisiana State Police Master Trooper, Brooks David.

As a safety precaution, that led to all the westbound lanes of 1-10 being shutdown according to David.

“We had to get hazardous materials from state police out here along with the fire department from Rayne,” said David.

Only minor injuries were reported in all three of the crashes, according to Stelly.

David says at one point traffic congestion from the incident reached about 11 miles.

Louisiana State Police said in a news release that one of the 18-wheelers contains hazardous materials.

LSP’s Emergency Services were on scene as a precaution but no leak or spill was reported.
