Safety is on the minds of all parents when sending their children to school.

Cameras, doors, single points of entry, and metal detectors are some of the safety measures that are already in place in Iberia Parish schools.

“Before we educate one student we need to ensure that all students and employees are safe in our schools. That has to be a high priority unfortunately in this day and age.” says Superintendent Carey Lovellette. 

Tomorrow, the school board will vote on a security assessment of all facilities in the parish. “They are going to help us update our crisis plans so that we can be prepared, and we are going to train over 400 employees,” Lovellette said. 

If approved, these employees would be trained through scenarios and taught what to do during times of crisis. The services would cost about $40,000, and the superintendent says it would all come from grant money. 

“We don’t want to leave any stone unturned in terms of safety and security for our students, we take it very seriously.”

If approved, training for teachers could start in late October.
