A 4 month old infant lost her life Saturday after the vehicle she was a passenger in traveled off the road and struck a tree.

State Police say the single-vehicle crash happened on US Highway 71 just north of Louisiana Highway 514 in Crossroads, La.

An initial investigation by State Police has revealed that 23-year-old Desmond Scarborough of Natchitoches, La. was driving south on US 71 during  heavy rainfall.

Police say the vehicle traveled off the road, down a steep embankment, and struck a tree.

4-month-old Miracle Scarborough of Natchitoches, La. was restrained at the time of the crash, but was pronounced dead at the scene by the Red River Parish Coroner’s Office.

A routine toxicology sample was obtained from the driver and will be submitted for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
