Investigators search for a second suspect involved in New Iberia murder

One person is in custody following a deadly shooting Monday evening at the McDonalds’s on Admiral Doyle Drive in New Iberia.

Investigators say they are still looking for a second suspect.

Police have identified the victim from Monday night’s shooting as 20-year-old Levonne Johnson of Jeanerette.

17-year-old Jorie Walker of New Iberia has been charged with second degree murder after last nights fatal shooting.

Major Wendell Raborn says detectives were in the area at the time that shots rang out. Within minutes, investigations caught one of the suspects as he was running away.

This year alone the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office has responded to 34 shootings, eight of them homicides.

Members of the community impacted by this violence have shown solidarity by holding peace walks and vigils throughout the year.

The city has been anticipating the reestablishment of the city’s police department since voters passed a safety tax in October, 2017.

On July 1, the police department will officially take over patrol of the city of New Iberia from the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Department.
