NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY)– The Iberia Sheriff’s Office is investigating a New Iberia Councilman after deputies say a truck belonging to the councilman was used in several burglaries.

Two camps were burglarized in Cypremort Point, one parish over in St. Mary. Which ultimately led to a police chase that ended near College Road in New Iberia

On December 28, 2015, a St. Mary Parish deputy observed a suspicious vehicle at a camp in Cypremort Point.

The police report reads, while the deputy was investigating the suspicious vehicle, the truck took off at a high rate of speed.

The chase ended in New Iberia, and St. Mary deputies arrested Kerry Oppenheimer and Brett Hopes on charges of flight from an officer and illegal possession of stolen goods.

Six months later, news surfaced in the Iberia Sheriff’s office that the truck used in the burglary belonged to New Iberia councilman, Raymond Shoe Do Lewis.

Sheriff Ackal says, “In in the vehicle, we found some items that were stolen from peoples trucks parked at the Patoutville boat landing.”

Sheriff Ackal added that is why the investigation is taking place, and why he wants to question Lewis. He tells News 10 he only wants to know how the suspect got the truck from Lewis.

“It will be a cold cold day in hell when I will submit myself to an interview with an indicted Sheriff” says Councilman Raymond Lewis, adding the man was restoring the truck.

As of now, the investigation continues without certainty of what will happen next.
