Two St. Martinville homeowners started their day with a car plowing through their home while they were still inside.

Mary Ann Hypolite says, on any given day, she and her husband spend their morning in their living room, but today they went about their day differently. And that could have saved their lives.

Hypolite says they were getting ready to go to church around 9:30 Sunday morning. She tells us she was in her bedroom when her husband saw, through their living room window, a car reversing at a high speed straight towards their home. The next thing that happened is what she calls a nightmare.

“It just went straight through the wall. I thought it was an explosion. It was so loud. It scared me so much. I thought the house had exploded or something. And the car was sitting right in my living room,” explains Hypolite.

She says despite seeing the place she and her husband have called home for more than 30 years turned to rubble, Hypolite is glad they were both able to walk out without a scratch. And she’s thankful for those supporting them.

St. Martinville Police had received reports of the driver losing control due to being shot at, but Police Chief Ricky Martin says the shooting allegation has not been confirmed.

The chief stated, “the driver said nobody was shooting at him.” The driver, however, has been charged with careless operation of a vehicle.
