A Jeanerette homeowner was transported to a Lafayette hospital with burns after escaping a house fire Sunday morning.

Fire crews were called to the 1100 block of Big Four Corners just before 7 a.m. and on arrival found heavy flames and smoke coming from the front door area of the structure.

Chief Clarence Clark said 16 firefighters from the surrounding areas responded to the scene and the fire was contained within 10 minutes.

He said the 78 year old homeowner received second degree burns to his face, legs and feet and will remain in the hospital for a few days.

“He had just woken up when he was walking toward the area and heard a pop and the alarms went off.”

Clark said the home had just received smoke detectors under the Louisiana State Fire Marshals Office Operation Save a Life Program.

The cause remains under investigation.
