UPDATE: Former Natchitoches police officer Robert Barthelemy has been found guilty of first degree murder.

Jury selection has begun in Saint Landry Parish for the capital murder trial of a former Natchitoches police officer.

Robert Barthelemy, 34, is accused of kidnapping and killing 25-year-old Tony Procell back in August of 2013.

Procell had been missing for several days after allegedly being taken at gun point by Barthelemy. After an expansive search, Procell’s body was found in a shallow grave near Saline Lake.

Barthelemy is facing several charges, including first degree murder. He initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, and later changed his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.

Barthelemy and Procell had served in the National Guard together, and prosecutors have said the killing was the result of a dispute over a woman.

Barthelemy sat quietly in court Monday listening attentively while taking notes and reviewing juror questionnaires. He wore a blue button-down dress shirt and no handcuffs. Relatives did not appear to be present in the courtroom.

Jury selection was moved to St. Landry Parish in hopes of avoiding bias among the jurors due to pre-trial publicity. Once 12 jurors and 2 alternates are selected, the jury will be moved to Sabine Parish for the duration of the trial.

66 potential jurors showed up to the courthouse Monday morning. Of those, 60 are currently undergoing the jury selection process.

Sabine Parish Judge Steven Beasley, District Attorney Don Burke and defense attorney Richard Goorley are questioning potential jurors on their opinions and beliefs surrounding the death penalty.

Groups of 15, referred to as panels, are only being told Barthelemy is on trial for capital murder. They are being told nothing specific to the case.

Of the first group of 15, only one potential juror had heard or read any stories about the case.

Jury selection is expected to take at least one week.
