CROWLEY, La. (The Daily Advertiser) – A jury in Acadia Parish unanimously found Kerry Bertrand guilty Thursday of the 2013 second-degree murder of his stepdaughter, 20-year-old Skylar Credeur.

Bertrand is believed to have drowned Credeur in a bathtub in their rural Acadia Parish home Aug. 20, 2013.

Fifteenth Judicial District Court District Attorney Keith Stutes said that the amount of evidence against Bertrand, from finding him in the attic of the home to his alleged threats to Credeur and her mother, was overwhelming.

The case was prosecuted by Burleigh G. Doga, assisted by Stutes.

“We think it was a satisfactory outcome,” he said.

Bertrand was found in the attic of Credeur’s home by a relative the night police found Credeur drowned in a bathtub. Credeur’s cause of death was ruled a homicide by drowning.

Bertrand had threatened repeatedly to kill Credeur and “hide (her) body in a swamp,” while sexually abusing her over a period of years, according to a statement Credeur submitted to the Acadia Parish court seeking a protective order against Bertrand.

She said Bertrand sexually abused her for years until she was 16, sneaking into her bedroom at night and threatening to kill her if she told anyone, according to the statement.

Bertrand spent two months in prison for child molestation after Credeur pressed charges, but was released Aug. 13, 2013. Credeur almost immediately filed for a protective order, which he broke more than once.

A week later, she was found dead.

Sentencing is set before Judge Kristian Earles on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. Bertrand faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment at hard labor without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
