The city of Lafayette has a project to put an end to uncovered bus stops. On Tuesday, McDonald’s of Acadiana unveiled one of three bus stops it adopted.

One of the stops is along the Evangeline Thruway in front of the McDonald’s restaurant. “It’s not just for their customers but employees who utilize the bus stop,” LCG Councilwoman Liz Hebert said.

Hebert says a covered bus stop offers riders a chance to avoid possible harsh weather conditions. “Adopt a Stop” is public-private partnership where a local business or community leader helps to pay for a bus stop shelter.

“What the stop includes is the concrete to make it ADA compliant.  We have the shelter of course; a bench and a trash can.  To me one of the most exciting parts is a phone charger,” Hebert added.

Hebert says other bus stop sheltering partnerships include Unitech Training Academy, LPSS adopted a stop near a high school and Lafayette General Health adopted over eight bus stops. “That’s just to name a few,” Hebert added.

Hebert says LCG budgets to cover 11 transportation stops a year.

The program, “Adopt a Stop”, helps to get stops covered more quickly. Learn more  here here.
