LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- Just an hour and a half after Diocese of Baton Rouge released its list of 37 accused clergy members, little has been said about the release of the Diocese of Lafayette’s list.
Lafayette Bishop Douglas Deshotel has the following statement today:
The Diocese of Baton Rouge has released the names of priests who have been removed from active ministry due to credible allegations of abuse with a minor. The Diocese of Lafayette is currently researching historical files to also disclose a list of those priests removed from ministry or deceased who have credible allegations of the abuse of a minor. That will be disclosed as soon as the research has been completed.
The crime and sin of sexual abuse of a minor does terrible harm to a child which affects him or her throughout their lives. Let us offer our prayers and support during their difficult journey to healing and peace. The Diocese of Lafayette remains committed to rooting out this evil no matter when it occurred. We are also committed to making every Church, school and entity a safe environment for all.
As always if you know or suspect a minor is being abused notify law enforcement or the Diocese of Lafayette who will in turn notify authorities.
Archbishops in Houma-Thibodaux and New Orleans have already released lists of priests accused sex abuse.
