Lafayette firefighters responded to two house fires in North Lafayette and one burning vehicle fire in South Lafayette early Sunday morning.

At 2:24 a.m., a house fire was reported in the 400 block of South Orange Street.

According to the Spokesperson Alton Trahan, the owners reported a fire in their child’s bedroom and when firefighters arrived, the home was filled with smoke.

The fire was contained to the bedroom and was quickly extinguished.

The home sustained moderate smoke and fire damage, Trahan said.

Everyone escaped without injuries, he said.

Investigators determined the occupants were utilizing the oven for heating when a young child lit a wooden item in the stove and brought it in the bedroom which then ignited the bedding material.

Fortunately, the child was not injured, Trahan said.

Fire officials cautioned the home owners on the safety concerns of using ovens or stove tops for heating.

At 2:56 a.m. a fire was reported in the 1000 block of E. Alexander Street.

Trahan said the homeowners stated their fire alarm system activated alerting them of a fire in the attic.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a small area in the attic, Trahan said.

An electrical short in wires was the likely cause, Trahan said.

Then, at 4:45 a.m., Firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the 400 block of Ridge Road.

Trahan said an abandoned vehicle was burning in the parking lot of Roofing Louisiana. There was no damage to the building, he said.

After extinguishing the fire, officials determined the vehicle was reported stolen on Saturday and was intentionally set on fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers (232-TIPS) or the Lafayette Fire Department at 291-8716.
