Lafayette General Medical Center becomes Acadiana’s only Level 2 trauma center

LAFAYETTE, La. (The Advertiser)- Lafayette General Medical Center has been verified as Acadiana’s first Level 2 trauma center, expanding the hospital’s unique specialized emergency services in the region.

With the announcement Tuesday, Lafayette General will now have constant access to a trauma surgeon, on-call neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons and trained trauma nurses. It will also have 24/7 access to specialty and critical-care physicians, on-site anesthesia providers and a surgical services team.

The Level 2 trauma center verification ensures the hospital is equipped to handle critically injured patients, including those suffering strokes, heart attacks, organ injuries, traumatic brain injuries, multiple bone fractures and gunshot wounds.

“This Level 2 trauma center designation means we have the capacity and capability to provide the most advanced life-saving measures in this region, and it further demonstrates Lafayette General Health’s commitment to Acadiana,” Lafayette General Health President David Callecod said when making the announcement.

The hospital staff has worked toward the Level 2 trauma center designation for the last three years, he said.
