(The Daily Advertiser) – Lafayette continues to feel the brunt of a slow economy.
New data released Tuesday from the Louisiana Workforce Commission shows the Lafayette metro statistical area has lost 6,900 not seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in the past year. The area has seen a year-over-year loss of jobs for 21 consecutive months.
In October, the Lafayette MSA had an estimated 205,600 nonfarm jobs, representing no change from September. Government added 400 jobs this month, while the trade, transportation and utilities sector and the professional and businesses services sector lost 300 jobs each.
In the Lafayette MSA since October 2015:
- Manufacturing has lost 2,800 jobs, 24 straight months of year-over-year loss
- Mining and logging is down 2,400 jobs, 22 straight months of year-over-year loss
- Professional and business services lost 1,600 jobs, 20 months of year-over-year loss
- Financial activities is down 300 jobs, for 33 straight months of year-over-year loss
Statewide, Louisiana added 7,300 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in October but has lost 6,800 jobs over the year. The state has lost nonfarm jobs year-over-year for 15 consecutive months. In the private sector, 8,500 jobs were added in October, but that gain is 4,300 fewer than last year, a year-over-year loss for the 14th consecutive month.
