HENDERSON, La. (KLFY) – State Police say a Lafayette man was killed this morning in a crash on I-10 near Henderson while trying to help another motorist remove an object from the roadway.

Master Trooper Brooks David said 25-year-old Vineeth Keesara, of Lafayette, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office.

Around 1:27 a.m. a woman from Jacksonville, Florida was driving a 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan and towing a U-Haul trailer on I-10 westbound.

Investigators determined the trailer became detached from the vehicle after she drove over an overpass.

It came to a stop in the outside westbound lane of I-10. Keesara saw the trailer on the interstate and pulled over to help the woman remove it from the roadway.

While Keesara and the woman were attempting to move the trailer a 1989 Peterbilt tractor-trailer swerved right to avoid hitting the trailer but was unsuccessful.

The Peterbilt hit the disabled trailer and the Volkswagen. Keesara and the woman were subsequently hit in both of the collisions.

The driver of the truck, an 81-year-old man from Woodville, Mississippi, voluntarily submitted to a chemical sobriety test and results were negative.

State Police do not suspect impairment as a factor in the crash.
