Lafayette Parish voters approved the Home Rule Charter Amendment in this weekend’s election.
It splits the current city-parish council into two separate councils, but Lafayette will not see that change until January of 2020.
Anyone wanting to run for the new city or parish councils must qualify between August 6-8 of 2019.
Of the current council members, Liz Hebert, Nanette Cook, Pat Lewis, and Bruce Conque can seek re-election for either council since they live in the city of Lafayette.
Kevin Naquin can also run for re-election, but only for the parish council.
Those who qualify will be on the ballot for the election next October.
This will be the first time since 1996 that the city of Lafayette will have its own city council, like the other five municipalities in Lafayette parish.
