Today, the Louisiana Department of Education released spring 2017 LEAP 2025 results for grades
3-8 and LEAP 2025/End-of-Course (EOC) results for high schools.

Overall, Lafayette Parish students showed continued improvement in the number of students scoring Mastery and Advanced in ELA, Math, and Social Studies in 2017-2018.

Science scores were not reported this year because that portion of the LEAP 2025 was being field-tested. 37% of Lafayette Parish students scored at the Mastery or Advanced level compared to 34% of students statewide. Overall growth in the parish exceeded growth in the state by 2%.

All major subgroups reported by the Louisiana Department of Education grew in Lafayette Parish this year, and 65% of schools in the parish showed overall growth in students scoring Mastery or above on the test. Lafayette ranked 6th in the state in overall improvement during the 2017-2018 school year when compared with other districts.

Four Lafayette Parish schools increased their overall performance by 10% or more. These were
Katharine Drexel Elementary (10% growth), Ernest Gallet Elementary (10% growth), Westside
Elementary (12% growth), and Myrtle Place Elementary (18% growth).

Seven schools significantly outpaced the state’s overall 34% of students scoring Mastery or above.
All seven had 50% or more students scoring Mastery or above.

Katharine Drexel Elementary, L. Leo Judice Elementary, Plantation Elementary, Prairie Elementary,
Edgar Martin Middle, and David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy also outperformed the state
with 40% or more students scoring Mastery or above.

Among the Emerging Schools, Carencro Heights Elementary and Alice Boucher Elementary showed growth in all areas.

ELA, Grades 3-8

In ELA, grades 3-8, 68% of schools showed overall growth in the number of students scoring
Mastery or above. Four schools showed strong growth, posting 10% or higher gains. These were
Katharine Drexel Elementary (12%), Green T. Lindon Elementary(17%), Myrtle Place Elementary (13%), and Ossun Elementary (10%). A number of schools had 50% of students scoring Mastery or
above in ELA.

Ossun Elementary, Ridge Elementary, J. Wallace James Elementary, and David Thibodaux STEM
Magnet Academy also outpaced the state percentage of 43% scoring Mastery or above.
Math, Grades 3-8, 53% of schools showed growth in the number of students scoring Mastery and above in math. 11 schools had 50% or more students scoring Mastery or above.

Edgar Martin Middle, Katharine Drexel Elementary, Westside Elementary, Youngsville Middle,
Ridge Elementary, J. Wallace James Elementary, Duson Elementary, and Ossun Elementary also
outperformed the state average of 32% scoring Mastery or above.

Overall, among all schools in the district, 90% of students taking Algebra I in middle school scored
Mastery or above, and L. J. Alleman Middle, Edgar Martin Middle, and Milton Elementary/Middle all
had more than 50% of students scoring Mastery or above.

Social Studies, Grades 3-8

79% of the schools in the parish showed growth among students performing at the Mastery and
Advanced levels in social studies. 27% of students state-wide scored at this level compared with
29% of Lafayette Parish students. When compared with other districts Lafayette Parish ranks 9th in
the state in improvement. 9 Lafayette Parish schools outperformed the state by a large margin
(13% or more).

Paul Breaux Middle, Katharine Drexel Elementary, L. Leo Judice Elementary, Prairie Elementary,
and Youngsville Middle all also outperformed the state, but by smaller margins.

High School

In high schools, assessment results are reported through End of Course exams in English III,
Biology, and U.S. History and LEAP 2025 tests in English I, English II, Algebra I, and Geometry. In
English III, 71% of Lafayette Parish students scored at the Excellent or Good level, which is nine
percentage points above the state average.

Algebra I students outperformed the state by 6%, with 74% of students scoring Basic or above.

In Geometry, 81% of students scored Basic or above which is 16% higher than the statewide average.

Four schools had 50% or more students scoring at Mastery or above.

Acadiana High and Comeaux High also outperformed the state by smaller margins.

The state average for students scoring Mastery or above on LEAP 2025 ELA tests was 43%.

Four schools had more than 50% of students scoring Mastery or above.

The state average for students scoring Mastery or above on LEAP 2025 math tests is 33%. Two
Lafayette Parish schools had more than 50% of students scoring Mastery or above: the Early
College Academy (92%) and David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy (57%).

Acadiana High, Comeaux High, Lafayette High, and Southside High also outperformed the state, but by a smaller margin.

Superintendent Dr. Donald Aguillard said “I commend the work of students and faculty members
for achieving the strong gains as evidenced by the data released today. The district is moving in the
right direction toward the new standard of Mastery, but we still have plenty of work to do, and we
will be focusing our efforts on achieving growth for every student.”
