An investigation is underway in Lafayette after the body of a man was found near the Dollar General on Carmel Drive.

A person in the area reported seeing an unresponsive man. They found an elderly man who had died, a spokesman for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Department said.

Even though it appears the man died of natural causes, deputies are preserving evidence and investigating just to be sure, the spokesman said.

Deputies say the man appeared to be homeless.
