LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – A local restaurant was heavily damaged by a two alarm fire overnight.

Firefighters responded to the blaze just before midnight when residents reported heavy smoke coming from Charlie’s Seafood Restaurant in the 1200 block of Moss Street.

Lafayette Fire Spokesman Alton Trahan says heavy smoke covered the building and firefighters encountered heavy flames in a back room of the business.

Fire officials outside noticed conditions were worsening and a second alarm was requested for backup.

Trahan says the fire was trapped between the original roof and the current metal roof of the structure.

The blaze was contained after an hour.

The restaurant was closed at the time the fire was reported and no injuries have been reported.

Investigators determined the fire originated in a food prep room next to the kitchen.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
