New information on a story we first told you about yesterday.

The Louisiana Board of Pharmacy just awarded a marijuana pharmacy permit license to the Apothecary Shoppe in Lafayette.

The store will be located in the 600-block of Guilbeau Road.

News Ten’s Caroline Marcello explains how the pharmacy will work.

You would go to a physician that has gone through the process of being certified by the Board of medical examiners. They would write a recommendation with the same look as a prescription. You’d bring that recommendation to the pharmacy dispensary and get it filled just as a regular prescription.

Senator Fred Mills says medical marijuana was legalized in Louisiana in the 70s. He says the hold up has been that law makers needed to find a way to prescribe it, dispense it, and track it to make sure there’s no criminal activity.

Louisiana is going to be the most regulated out of a lot of the medical marijuana states.

David Khey, a criminal justice professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette says there will only be a select group of physicians that will be able to prescribe medical marijuana.  Very non-traditional in terms of what we anticipate marijuana to be.

And it’s used in a way that most people who approve of medical marijuana products would prescribe.
