A Lake Charles man is dead after being struck by a vehicle overnight while standing on US Highway 90, according to State Police.
Shortly after at 7:00 p.m., police say they responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on US 90 east of Lake Charles.
An initial investigation revealed that 50-year-old Kelly Ray White of Lake Charles was standing in the eastbound lane of travel in front of the Sunrise Inn when he was struck.
Police say White was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.
Impairment bu White is suspected to be a factor in the crash, according to police.
The driver of the vehicle, 80-year-old Paul Simien of Iowa, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
At the time of the crash, White was wearing dark colored clothing while standing in the roadway. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to walk facing traffic, use a sidewalk or highway shoulder when available, wear light colored clothing with reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night.
