LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Lafayette City-Parish Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux is speaking out. Boudreaux is once again suggesting that civil service board members Jason Boudreaux and Guy Lebreton resign.

On Tuesday, councilman Boudreaux played a recording of the civil service attorney and chairman talking about collecting court fees from Broussard. In the recording, the board attorney stated they can’t hang her as was done in the 1800’s to collect a debt.

LCG Councilman Boudreaux explains that he wants the board members in question to be held accountable for what they say to the media and do as public servants.

Boudreaux explains that he’s not buying the argument that the comments made were used to soothe tensions, a joke or ice breaker. “The purpose of a hanging and the effect it has on generations of people; I don’t consider it a joke.  I don’t consider it funny,” says Boudreaux.

Boudreaux called upon the media to challenge statements made by the Municipal Police and Fire Civil service Board Chairman, Vice Chairman and board attorney. “They’re trying to disguise this. So, I’m asking the media to hold them accountable,” adds Boudreaux.

Councilman Boudreaux claims the board attorney, Candice Hattan was being dishonest when she said the president of the NAACP, Marja Broussard was nearby during the recorded conversation.

Boudreaux produced a sign-in log where he says Marja’s name for that date is nowhere to be found.  “There’s nobody on this board who has an appreciation for what those comments do to people of color; to address the issue properly,” says the councilman.

Marja says she has no comment.  Marja’s sister says the statement in the recording is an assault on her family.  “Why would you say something like that about anybody?  This is 2016, not the dark ages,” adds Phyllis Deruise.

“It’s not even about Marja Broussard. It’s about the impact on the greater community,” explains Boudreaux.
