LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – If you are wanting to have a Cajun music experience of a lifetime, Mamou is the place to be.
Mamou is home to roughly three thousand people. The quaint town may be small, but it’s featured on the world map as the Cajun music capital of the world.
Normally not much goes on in the small town, but if you are on 6th street Saturday morning, Fred’s Lounge is booming with business.
Fred’s has been around since 1946. It is known for it’s unique Cajun party that starts bright and early at 7:30 a.m. The bar is only open one day a week and that’s all they need!
Owner Steve Guillory said guests from all over the world pack the small building week after week because of the authentic French-Cajun experience.
Donny Broussard and the Louisiana Stars accordion player Donny Broussard said a Cajun party is second to none.
“The people are wonderful, it’s a big crowd of people and everybody just has fun, and that’s what it’s all about.”
Broussard said the thriving traditional French-Cajun heritage is what makes Louisiana such a special place.
“That’s what makes us different from anybody else, you know, we got to keep that tradition going and we’re going to keep doing it as long as we can.”
