“It was a total surprise”, Retired Brigadier General, Robert J. Leblanc said on Saturday (April 14, 2018). 

His friends and family, came to pick him up telling him they were going to the country club.  Instead, they were going to the National Guard located in Lafayette.

  Leblanc said, “My friend says, wear this, I said why, he goes were going to the country club, i didn’t believe him, i wouldn’t worn this.” 

The 96 year old received several awards from the Louisiana National Guards’ 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. 
 

He was presented with the Brigade Colors. Along with the Governor’s Commendation, and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Certificate.   
 

Leblanc feels like it’s not all about him, “I don’t feel its me getting the award, there was a lot of people under me, that did a lot of necessary things, that made me look good.  all I could do was draw up a plan, and see that everyone understood the plan. and that the plan was utilized when we had an event.” 

It was after WWII when Leblanc commanded at the 256th Infantry Brigade here in Lafayette. Recently the 96-year-old veteran was awarded the Congressional award in Washington.  For Leblanc, getting an award at home meant a lot to him. 
 
“It was very nice coming into my old unit,  commanded this unit for along time. i appreciated the fact that they recognized me, and all I have done. and also what they have done for me”, he said. 

On Friday, Vermillion Parish declared April 13 as General Robert J. Leblanc day in Abbeville.  Lester Duhe reports, “The proclamations were issued by the Vermilion Parish Police Jury and the Mayor of Abbeville, to recognize the many accomplishments and contributions LeBlanc has made to his country and community.”

With 7 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren, Leblanc’s family has supported him, every step of the way. Sitting in the front row were his daughters, grandchildren, and great grand babies.  Leblanc said, “Those are my babies”.
