On May 23, 2016, the Louisiana Senate honored Alvarez Hertzock Sr. posthumously for his post-military achievements throughout his beloved community of St. Landry Parish.To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Alvarez Hertzock Sr.WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the passing of Alvarez Hertzock Sr.on May 12, 2016, at the age of eighty-six; and WHEREAS, Alvarez Joseph Hertzock Sr. was born on April 21, 1930, to Alphonse Hertzock and Carrie Etta Conrad in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; andWHEREAS, he was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served a total of thirteen years; during four years of active duty, he served three tours in Korea; and he proudly wore the insignia of his ship, the USS De Haven, on his cap; andWHEREAS, Alvarez Hertzock was very active in veterans’ affairs and held memberships in several organizations including the American Legion Post 514 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2483 and also honorary membership in the USS Kidd; he was proud to serve as a master of Morse code; andWHEREAS, a cause he held close to his heart was to one day see himself and thousands of other Korean War veterans across the country receive their long overdue commendation medals from the South Korean government and that day came on September 16, 2000 at Evangeline Downs; andWHEREAS, he was most known for playing Taps at many local veterans’ funerals and celebrations including Veterans Day and Memorial Day as the bugler; andWHEREAS, Alvarez Hertzock was a Southern University alumnus who earned adegree in Industrial Arts Electronics; andWHEREAS, he was president of the Holy Family Alumni Association and member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church before becoming a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church where he was a choir member, a parish council member, confirmation teacher, lector, and membership director for the Knights of Columbus Queen of Angels Council 11270, Knights of Peter Claver of Holy Ghost Catholic Church; andWHEREAS, he was a Scoutmaster of a boy scout troop in Opelousas in the 1970s when he guided local youth including his own sons who were also boy scouts in his troop;andWHEREAS, he retired from the state as a social worker in 1986 and worked at various jobs part-time including working at Opelousas City Court, the St. Landry Parish Assessor’s office, was supervisor of an afterschool tutorial program at South Street Elementary School, and was a member of the St. Landry Parish Community Action Agency;andWHEREAS, his philosophy, “Serve God, Family, Country”, will forever sound, as will his bugle to those who knew and loved him as his musical talents fused with his love of poetry, allowing him to create incredible sounds and thought-provoking rhythmic poems;andWHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his father Alphonse Hertzock, mother Carrie Etta Conrad, sister Juliette Hertzock, brother Romeo Hertzock and adopted sister Marion Lastrapes; andWHEREAS, Alvarez Hertzock Sr. is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Patricia Thompson Hertzock; five children, Alvarez Hertzock II (Carol), Darla Hertzock Montgomery (Alex), Lucretia Hertzock, Patrice Hertzock-Barnes (Walter), and Conrad Hertzock (fiancé Lucretia Chancler); seven grandchildren, Brianne Montgomery Sanford (Jeromy), Alvarez Hertzock III, Alexis Montgomery, Arianne Hertzock, Cameron Hertzock, Brennan Hertzock and Makayla Hertzock; sister-in-law Barbara Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends; andWHEREAS, Mr. Hertzock was the kind of citizen who represents all that is good about Louisiana, a man with unique gifts and a generous spirit who shared his singular abilities with his community, state, and nation, as well as with his family and friends, and a man of courage and conviction who is now terribly missed but shall never be forgotten.THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Alvarez Hertzock Sr., does hereby extend posthumous honor and recognition to Mr. Hertzock for his outstanding accomplishments and legacy, and does hereby express enduring gratitude for his service to our country and for the tremendous pride he brought to his family, friends, community, state, and nation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the family of Alvarez Hertzock Sr.
