A lawsuit has been filed against Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mike Neustrom, City-Parish President Joey Durel, Lafayette Consolidated Government, among others for alleged deplorable conditions at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.

The Law Offices of L. Clayton Burgess filed the lawsuit on behalf of their client on September 28, 2015. The jail’s Director of Corrections Rob Reardon, two sheriff’s deputies, two current inmates, and a civilian are also included in the lawsuit.
Burgess’ client claims that he was “falsely arrested and imprisoned after he called to report a burglary at his home.” The lawsuit also alleges that the complainant was attacked and stabbed by two prisoners while he was in jail. The prisoners were allegedly able to unlock their cell doors and enter the complainant’s cell multiple times.
The lawsuit alleges there has been a widespread pattern of violence due to several conditions at the jail including:
- Overcrowding
- Understaffing
- Inadequate Physical Structure
- Prisoners being able to exit their cells
- Inadequate Classification and Separation of Prisoners
- Inadequate Supervision, Oversight and Administrative Controls
- Inadequate Searches and Shakedowns for Weapons and Contraband
- Inadequate Training
- Deliberate Indifference to the Constitutionally Unacceptable Risk of Violence Faced by Prisoners and Staff
