The Lafayette Parish School System has a total of 19 Magnet Academies.  LPSS Chief Academic Officer, Annette Samec says district-wide the lottery process opened up with 3,170 available seats.

“Some of those applicants who were eligible received a seat and those that go on the wait list we actually ended up with 1,007,” explains Samec about the waitlist count.

It’s the seats on the waitlist that LPSS will work to fill Tuesday, using a first come first serve rule. “We are going to open all the Academies except two because their waitlist is already.  L Leo Judice will not reopen and J Wallace James.”

Acceptance of an invitation to a magnet is provisionary because grades and discipline are factors.

Samec says the goal is not to give parents false hope with an endless waitlist and that’s why there’s a cut off to that. “First come first serve stays open until the seats are filled and we have a list of about 30.”
