Spring 2018 LEAP test results have been released. Lafayette Parish students show overall improvements compared to last year.
According to LPSS, Lafayette Parish students showed continued improvement in the number of students scoring Mastery and Advanced in ELA, Math, and Social Studies in 2017-2018
Myrtle Place Elementary ranks among the top percentage earners for Lafayette Parish Schools. Westside Elementary’s LEAP results were pleasantly surprising considering the school re-located students after the 2016 flood.
LPSS calculates the statewide the growth was 1% overall and LPSS students outpaced that score by 2%.
Accountability Director Tom Spencer says that’s a thumbs up — especially for the local numbers.
Myrtle Place Elementary saw an 18% increase in students scoring mastery or above compared to last year. Ernest Gallet Elementary and Katherine Drexel both a 10% growth. “They had some really nice academic improvement there,” adds Spencer.
Thomas contributes the improvement at Myrtle partly to the French immersion push to 100 percent. “French immersion students tend to be better students. If they struggle too much, they are put into a different program. They don’t stay in French immersion if their not successful students,” explains Spencer.
Westside Elementary Students remain displaced because of ongoing repairs on their campus following the 2016 flood. “We really just focused on academics, we had structure organization and Our Leader In Me implementation was back on track,” adds principal Lisa Thomas.
“We did out-perform the state almost across the board almost in every subject every grade level,” says Spencer.
