UPDATE: LPSS unanimously approves the new rezoning plan for the 2017-2018 school year.
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – This time next year some students may not be attending the school they thought they would be.
That’s because the Lafayette Parish School Board is expected to adopt a plan tonight to rezone the district’s lines to hopefully better distribute students throughout the parish.
Board members also say they hope to cut down on transportation costs as they return to a more “neighborhood-like” feel with the school zones.
If adopted, these changes won’t go into effect until the 2017-18 school year.
Many of these changes are still undecided as the board has yet to figure out where to place certain fifth-grade classes.
The board originally voted to place fifth graders back at elementary schools but tonight they’ll decide whether to keep the students at middle schools in order to maximize space.
They’ll also decide whether to allow rising juniors and seniors in high school to stay at their current school for their final years.
Superintendent Donald Aguillard also says this discussion will help the school board get a better picture of what these possible new zones will look like.
“The board members have been concerned about maximizing our existing assets. It’s something that has to happen for the district to continue to be effective,” Aguillard explained.
The school board says they are making these changes now to make sure families are well informed by next school year.
