UPDATE: Spokesman Alton Trahan says the fire originated in a chair in the kitchen and was started by smoke material.
The 87-year-old occupant was transported to a local hospital for evaluation as a precaution.
Trahan says the LUS employee was aware that an elderly man lived at the house and that’s when he stopped to help the man when he saw the smoke coming from the home.
