Numerous cyclists who go to and from work using their bicycles but in regards to the bike lanes throughout city they tell me simply there’s not enough.

Lafayette started a bicycle-friendly master plan a few years ago. It’s now on hold.

Bicycle riders would like to see the city get the plan going again. They want to see more bicycle-only lanes.

“They really don’t have any bike lane and that’s very important that we get more, said cyclist Ronald Albert.”

Major roads in the city are the biggest problems for cyclists.

“Johnson…some time on Pinhook and Ambassador Caffey… but its not necessary the safest places to ride, said Scott Coco.”

A group called “trail” is working to improve the bicycle trails in conjunction with local governments.

“So for instance were in partner with LCG and the NPO on that Atakapa – Ishak Trail. It’s an overall scheme that will connect Broad Bridge, Saint Martin Ville, Opelousas, so you’ll be able to ride through all those communities and really never have to touch a roadway, said Scott Schilling.”

Lafayette is also working on ways to add bicycle lanes to improve safety.

“We work with the folks in public works to umm kind of look at what places can be eligible for cycling safety and conversion to cycling, said Carlee Alm’labar.”

And a remainder for drivers

“Just be mindful of the riders on the side umm Lafayette is a big city everybody rides their bikes I see so… just ask riders to be mindful and to respect the road, said Kirk Pelichet.”

LCG has plans for more bicycle lanes in the future.
