Residents who live on Martinez Rd. in St. Landry Parish have been complaining about the road for years now.
As they put it, their day-to-day life is no easy task.
Jade Lavergne has lived on Martinez for 8 years.
Roy Picard has for 15 years.
They say they have dealt with the same dilemma since they moved in.
That being increased traffic over the years which causes more potholes.
When repair crews do come out to the road, it actually causes another problem.
“They come out here and they grate it which digs the road deeper and so when we get water, it just stays stagnant for at least three of four days and we can’t get in or out,” says Lavergne.
Neighbors say when there is even a thought of rain, they can’t park at home.
They have to take their cars to higher ground and walk.
“Well if you get a two-inch rain out there then you’re out of luck,” says Picard.
The trip increasingly difficult for Picard who recently had knee replacement surgery.
“It’s kind of hard to walk to the road and stuff because you have to watch the potholes and stuff too,” says Picard.
Both say they average two calls a week to the parish about the road.
They tell KLFY they’re told there isn’t enough manpower or money to do the repairs.
Instead, residents take matters into their own hands.
“We’ve had several neighbors come out and you know take their own tractors and try to grate the road and do something to where it’s passable,” says Lavergne.
Both also say the road is a liability when it comes to car maintenance.
“If you don’t go literally two miles an hour, you are going to have issues with your vehicle long-term,” says Picard.
St. Landry Parish President sent KLFY a statement in regards to the road:
“Upon my recent personal inspection earlier this week of Martinez Road, I have scheduled our parish road crew to adequately address any problem conditions within the next two to three weeks.”
