LAFAYETTE, La (KLFY) – For the 4th year, Blake Gallet, owner of Kirk’s U-Needa-Butcher, hosted customer appreciation day, only this year they took time out to hold a recognition ceremony to dedicate a first of its kind mural of nine of the communities’ heroes.
“It was something I think really needed to be done to honor people, because our community here is kind of forgotten,” said Gallet.
The mural honors legends Helma Constantine, Joe Dennis, Father Anthony Bourges, Paul Breaux, Dolly Broussard, Carol Syrie, Doremus Dorsey, W.D. Smith, and Rita Thibodeaux.
“I’m really proud to see some of these people,” said resident, Terry Shelvin.
“These people have set some stones here in the community, and hopefully we can live up to what they have done,” said Gallet.
With the help of a grant, the McComb-Veazey Neighborhood Coterie had local artist, Adrian Fulton, to paint the mural, which we’re told was completed in about a week.
“We decided to do the mural really to honor the community and those local legends both living and deceased that have done beneficial things in the community to uplift the community,” said Tina Bingham, coterie vice chairwoman.
Bingham says the group is making strides to take back their community and revitalize the area.
“We also wanted to just show the community, not just Mccomb-Veazey, but Lafayette, that there are positive things going on in our neighborhood,” said Bingham.
Bingham says the coterie is planning to have another mural painted at the old Sonny’s Barbershop on the corner of 12th and S. Orange St.
